Seamus Coleman, an Everton defender, has given a new indication about his contract plans ahead of Ireland’s match against Hungary.
The veteran defender’s current contract at Goodison Park expires at the end of June, but the Toffees have confirmed that the 35-year-old has been offered a one-year extension, along with Ashley Young.
Although the agreement has yet to be signed, Coleman may have just indicated that he wants to take the offer by saying in an interview that he couldn’t see playing for anyone other than the Toffees.
Speaking to Irish source RTE Sport on June 3, he said: “It was a challenging three seasons, but last year was just as tough with the point deductions and all that stuff.
“But, happily, as a squad and a fans, we pulled together and crossed the finish line, which we are extremely proud of. But the last few weeks have been spent disconnecting from everything, spending time with relatives, and retreating here.
“Listen, Everton is a massive part of me and a massive part of what I do and I couldn’t see myself anywhere else, to be honest with you.”
Has Seamus Coleman signed a new deal with Everton at Goodison Park?
While Coleman was again sidelined for much of the season due to injury, his Premier League experience and knowledge make him a vital member of Sean Dyche’s squad, even while he is on the treatment table.
Combine that with the fact that the Toffees need depth at fullback, and it’s clear that they should be doing everything they can to keep him for at least another year.
He won’t play every week, but when he does, he is more than capable of doing the job, as evidenced by his performance in the final-day defeat to Arsenal, in which he kept Leandro Trossard quiet for the majority of the game.
Hopefully, Coleman will make it through these international friendlies uninjured before signing on the dotted line at Goodison. There is unlikely to be much business in or out of the club this summer, so this could be one of the more significant transfer announcements.
