Newcastle United was one of the Premier League clubs rumored to have interested in the Aston Villa-bound midfielder.
Aston Villa have reportedly reached an agreement with Luton Town to sign Ross Barkley.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, notably Newcastle United and Everton, since rekindling his career with the Hatters. Barkley scored five goals and four assists in 32 Premier League games last season, prompting speculation about his future England selection.
Luton were relegated from the top flight after Gareth Southgate’s call did not materialize. However, Barkley’s recent good surge is expected to propel him to the Champions League next season. According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Villa will pay a £5 million price for Barkley, who is set to complete the formalities in early July.
Romano wrote on X, now known as Twitter: “EXCL: Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement with Luton Town to sign Ross Barkley.” I understand the fee will be approximately £5 million. The final step is medical exams and the player’s formal signature; an agreement from the player’s side is expected in early July. “Here we go, soon.”
Newcastle’s interest in Barkley is understood to have been unfounded, while several fans suggested that signing the former Chelsea player would be a sensible decision after he featured in Luton’s 4-4 draw on Tyneside in February. Barkley scored and assisted, and after the game, he earned the respect of fans by waxing lyrical about the club and St James Park.
He stated, “We knew what we were going up against. Newcastle are a top team that excels in the transition and counterattack. They played well, and we played well. It was a bit like a basketball game. However, it was an entertaining and enjoyable game to participate in.
“I am aware of this, as I used to like playing against Newcastle. It’s a terrific club; I’m a fan; the stadium is fantastic; the fans create a tremendous atmosphere, and I enjoy playing in venues like this as well. It’s good to score a goal, and I tend to have some luck playing against them as well.
